All about Cindy Spencer Pape
Let's see - I've lived on both coasts of the US, but mostly in the middle - Michigan. I live in a household full of men - a husband and two teenage sons - and animals - dog, iguana and chinchilla by current count. My degrees are in zoology, which I find helps considerably in understanding the men. I've been writing for almost ten years now, and sold my first book in 2006, then another 25 since then. So it's been a busy few years.
How Cindy Spencer Pape got into Erotic Romance?
Honestly? I always wrote HOT, but not quite at the level of erotic romance. One of my editors told me that if I upped the heat just a little on one of my books, it could be moved to that house's erotic line and I would sell five or ten times more. Made sense to me, so I did, and I enjoyed it very much. I've never looked back.
The Scoop!
Well, I'm hoping to appear at an event sponsored by a store called Leather Noir, here in suburban Detroit in July. I don't have all the details about that yet, but I'm sure I'll get them up on my website as soon as I do. I'll be at Romanticon in Ohio in October. Again, you can check my website for details, but I do know the book fair will be open to the public - you don't have to attend the conference to come say hello. I really hope to have more events this summer, but you can always find me on the web!
Wings of the Raven, book 2 in my Guardian Investigations series, will be out on August 24, and I'm working on #3, tentatively titled Pride of the Panther. What Cindy Spencer Pape likes to read...
We don't have enough space to list EVERYTHING I read. Mostly romance, with a little bit of fantasy, SF, and mystery thrown in for fun. I still read everything Elizabeth Lowell, Linda Howard, and Jayne Ann Krentz put out, along with Angela Knight, Lora Leigh, and Christine Warren. In e-books, I love Bronwyn Green, Desiree Holt, Anny Cook, and so many more. I'm avidly waiting for the next of Jim Butcher's Dresden novels. Elizabeth Peters, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams are favorites to read over and over.
INTERVIEWThe Sensible Questions:- 1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
- I got engaged after dating a man for six weeks. Twenty-five years later I still adore him. So I really do believe in love at first sight. I think that's reflected in my writing. Other than that, I'd have to say that little bits of my experience are peppered in. Tiny details get scattered into each novel, just for fun.
- 2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
- Now that isn't a fair question! If I didn't fall in love with each of my heroes, the books wouldn't be any good at all. Likewise if I didn't identify with each heroine a little bit, they wouldn't ring true. So I suppose the honest answer to that is whichever one I'm writing at the moment.
- 3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
- I love writing erotic, but probably am best when it's an equal blend of romance and heat.
- 4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
- See my list above! Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels was probably the first author I read with a "voice" that really grabbed me. Add a little bit of Douglas Adams' ironic humour, and some Angela Knight heat, and that's probably a pretty close mix to where I am.
- 5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
- Usually characters...but not always. I'm not exactly what you'd call a consistent person.
- 6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
- A) Don't quit. If a manuscript is rejected, just keep on going! B) Not everyone is going to like the same book. Expect glowing reviews and really horrible ones. Read them, then refer back to A: Keep on going.
- 7.Describe your writing space.
- I don't have one. I have a laptop. Kitchen table is my main spot, though the TV tray in front of the couch is a close second.
The Naughty Questions:
- How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
- giggle...a few...some of them more worn out than others.
- What or who does your ideal man look like?
- Again, this depends on my mood. My SO of many years is 6'3" with dark blond hair and green eyes, so yeah, I write a lot of tall, slim heroes. Many are blond, but I like Hugh Jackman and Tom Selleck too - both brunette, and of wildly different generations. Really, I enjoy a good looking man in all ages, shapes, and colors - though the pouty lips currently in fashion bug the daylights out of me. Men shouldn't pout. That guy in Twilight? Bleh!
Tom Selleck
 Liam Neeson
Anthony Bourdain
 Hugh Jackman

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?Hmmmm. The part where my hero turns into a dragon? Probably not. Seriously, the choreography is all in my head. Some of it is familiar - after two decades, you do a fair bit of experimenting, after all - some not so much. But the emotional tie that brings it all together? That's very, very real in my experience.
What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?My dh would say he prefers me in none at all. But nobody else on the planet wants to see that. I mostly wear jeans and casual shirts, but I do like pretty, colourful undies beneath them.
What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?Tight jeans and T-shirt? Perfectly tailored business suit? Whatever he wears with confidence and flair - and even better if a few buttons are undone.
What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?Sex in a grotto in San Diego's Balboa Park comes to mind...

I was pulled into the storyline from the first sentence and the author held my attention to the very end. I also enjoyed how some of the characters were psychically inclined and Ms. Spencer Pape wove their abilities fascinatingly well throughout the plot. I assure you that as my heart skipped a beat during a few of the dramatically intense scenes, so will yours. This is a must read for any reader. Five Hearts and a Reviewer Top Pick." - Night Owl Romance
"Grade A Outstanding Read.
Heart of the Bear is the first book in the new Guardian Investigation Series and I for one can't wait for the rest of the series to come out. We've met all of the supporting characters in this one and each one is yummier than the next. I hope Ms. Pape doesn't make us wait too long! Heart of the Bear will call to you on a primitive level, trust me this is one call you won't want to miss! Grade A outstanding read" - Simply Romance Reviews Read An Excerpt:[Click here to expand/collapse]EXCERPT:There was something in the air that night. I sat in my grandparent's Simi Valley backyard and tried to meditate, but I couldn't relax. My whole body tingled and twitched, like a storm was coming, though Southern California was in the middle of a drought. I'd come up here for advice, but all I'd gotten was more questions. I had three days left to make a decision about my future, and all I knew so far was that something was in the air. I felt it coming just like most people heard a freight train roaring towards them down the track. I couldn't tell what was looming, but I was pretty sure it was going to hit me just as hard as the damn steam engine.
"You going to stay out here all night?"
I jumped at the voice, then I smiled. Not many people in this world can sneak up on me, even when I'm moping. My grandfather is one of them. Even at eighty-eight, he still has the stealth and psychic power that made him one of the most successful Navajo intelligence operatives in World War II. He put his arm around my waist, and I leaned into his shoulder, just like I'd done since I was a kid.
"No, Granddad. No answers in the wind tonight. I think I'm going to head up to the cabin for the weekend. Maybe the spirits will have more to say to me up there." My grandfather had moved to LA to be a cop after the war, but he'd always needed to spend some time away from the city, so he'd built a cabin up in the Sierra Madres. Any of the family was welcome to use the place when we needed a retreat. And I needed one right now - big time.
Granddad nodded. "You be careful up there. Something - someone - is coming. I'd go with you if I could, little one, but you need to face this challenge alone. Call once in a while, and let your grandmother know you're alive."
I nodded. We both knew it wasn't necessary. Nana was a Romany Gypsy. During the war, Granddad had rescued her from a German death squad who'd planned to burn her as a witch. Her psychic touch hadn't faded in all these years. But calling to check in was only polite, and Nana would expect it.
"Listen to the winds, girl. Listen with your heart as well as your ears." With that cryptic bit of advice, Granddad turned and walked back towards the house, whistling a tune. Damn, if it didn't sound like Aerosmith. The old man never failed to surprise me. Georgie and the Dragon - Genre: Historical/paranormal

Georgie and the Dragon - Brits in Time Anthology
There's more than one way to conquer a dragon.
Who'd believe that in the enlightened year of 1815, Georgie Burns' Welsh village still felt the need to make its 100-year sacrifice to the local dragon lord? And just because she was supposed to be a descendant of St. George, why was everyone in town suddenly looking at her?
Fine. If being the dragon sacrifice would save her younger siblings from the poor house, she'd do it. After she got the agreement in writing. When the villagers found her safe and sound the next morning, maybe they'd quit believing in this dragon nonsense. But just in case there was some truth to it, she was taking her great-great grandfather's sword. Someone needed to put an end to this appalling tradition once and for all.
When Caddoc sees the buxom, flame-haired beauty waiting for him on the rocks, he can't resist flying in for a closer look. Then the little minx tries to stab him with an enchanted sword. For the first time in centuries, this sacrifice business is going to be fun. First he has to take away her weapon, and, takes her back to his lair. After he shapeshifts to human form - a shape she recognises as the reclusive lord of a nearby castle - he can teach her what it means to satisfy all the cravings of a dragon. What the reviewers are saying"From the dedication of the story on, Cindy Spencer Pape gives herself some big shoes to fill. And not only does she fill them, but they may as well be gold plated Manolo Blahniks. This story was fantastic. It was hot, it was mystical and magical and all of the things I have come to expect from a Cindy Spencer Pape story. And once again she did not disappoint. This was over far too soon and I can't wait for her to get that itch for dragons again cause I will be first in line (or is that online?) to buy and devour it." - TEB author Dakota Rebel Read An Excerpt:[Click here to expand/collapse]EXCERPT:"The law of the village states that if no volunteer comes forth, a general lottery is to be held..." The mayor broke off as someone interrupted.
"I think one of the Burns girls should go," offered a familiar voice.
Thank you Mrs. Jones, Georgie thought bitterly as she saw her supposed housekeeper's pinched face look coldly around the room. "They've nowhere to go, and no money. Nothing but a burden on the village, otherwise."
"These would be the daughters of the late vicar?" his lordship inquired.
Georgie stood, refusing to be talked about as if she wasn't there. "Yes, my lord."
"Good day, Miss Burns." A smile flitted momentarily across his lips. "And what say you?"
"While it is true that we find ourselves in somewhat desperate straits, I can assure you - all of you - " She glared at Mrs. Jones. "That neither of my sisters is presently for sale."
Lord Weir's intense grey eyes flashed with what might have been humour. "Very well, then. Does anyone have any other suggestions?"
There were more murmurs and head-shaking until the mayor cleared his throat and spoke from the pulpit. "In that case, I shall require that every maiden above the age of sixteen be present in the village square tomorrow for the lottery. If anyone is not present, she will be chosen by default. Miss Burns, that includes yourself and Miss Henrietta. Now if there is no further discussion..."
Georgie gulped. A lottery? At fifteen, Willa would be safe, but both Georgie and seventeen-year-old Hetty would be subject to it.
"Aye, like there are any maidens left in the village," one old woman near Georgie chortled. "Every girl in town knew the sacrifice was coming, and jumped the fire with her beau last Beltane. Going to be a bevy of infants come February."
That bit of information dramatically changed the probable outcome of tomorrow's lottery. Georgie and Hetty hadn't known. Could they be the only virgins left in Draigmor? Even if they weren't, she didn't trust anyone in this town not to manipulate the outcome so that she or Hetty was chosen. She couldn't lose Hetty, and if she herself was taken, there'd be no one to care for the children. Lord Weir had a sister, or so she'd heard through village gossip. Surely he'd understand that her siblings needed her. Although...
"Wait." She barely heard herself call out. An idea began to form in her mind, but it was so improbable, she could hardly bring herself to articulate it.
"Miss Burns?" Lord Weir raised one dark eyebrow.
"You're really going to allow this - this - travesty?" He seemed like such a rational man.
He shrugged, those broad shoulders rippling beneath his superfine coat. "It is part of the village charter - an agreement one of my ancestors signed centuries ago. If the villagers insist, then all I can do is offer my assistance to the family of the girl."
Unbelievable. Georgie's plan was a tenuous one at best, but it was the only road she could see out of a bad situation. So much of it would depend on his lordship. She sensed, somehow, that he was a man of honour. That honour might well be her family's only chance. She swallowed hard, then stood and looked up at his lordship, gazing straight into his remarkable eyes. "I will volunteer to be the sacrifice - under certain conditions." Lust in the Afternoon - Naughty Nooners Anthology
Sometimes all it takes is one afternoon.
Ted Wayne is the IT manager at a gay online magazine and bookstore that also provides live streaming peep shows. During a fierce snowstorm, the on-air talent can't make it in for the "Lust in the Afternoon" show, and only Ted is around to fill the void.
Art director Grayson Jeffries talks Ted into fifteen minutes in front of the camera, Ted agrees partly because he thinks Gray is the hottest thing going. He's reluctant to masturbate in front of Gray, but at least with Gray in the room, he has no worries about getting it up.
Gray has wanted Ted for months - now he has this one chance to make all his fantasies come true. Read An Excerpt:[Click here to expand/collapse]EXCERPT:"What do you mean he can't make it in?" Ted Wayne wiped his palms on his jeans and swallowed the panic rising in his throat.
"Sorry, Ted," his boss's voice crackled over the static on the phone connection. A vicious winter storm had blanketed Detroit, leaving the office all but empty. It was also seriously fucking with communications. "Whoever is already in the office is going to have to do today's nooner. And it looks like that leaves you, since Gray will have to work the camera."
"I - I can't, Martin. I'm just a computer jockey - no good in front of a camera."
"You're young and in great shape. Our subscribers will love you." Men for Men was one of the hottest gay e-zines in the business, with tens of thousands of subscribers. Many of those tuned in to the daily live-feed "Lust in the Afternoon" spots, and even more went back and downloaded the clips for a hefty fee.
Ted admitted he liked to watch the feed as he uploaded it to the site, had even downloaded a few at home for his personal viewing, but he'd never even considered being the on-air talent. "Don't we have any back-up for when things like this happen? A couple of clips already on disk?"
"We used the last of those over the holidays," Martin said. "When so many were out with the flu epidemic. Now we're stuck. The weather reports say it will be at least two days before the roads are clear. That leaves you and Gray as the only two who can get into the office, besides Nathalie."
Nathalie Perot was an incredible receptionist, and a pretty little lipstick lesbian, but not what Men to Men's subscribers expected to see on screen. Art director Grayson Jeffries, on the other hand, was a fucking sex god - tall and muscular with a smooth shaved head and a trim goatee, milk-chocolate skin and dark chocolate eyes.
"I can work the cameras," Ted practically pleaded. "Gray will look much better on camera than me." Understatement. Gray Jefferies was a walking wet dream. Over the last month, Ted had jacked off night after night just imagining Gray's strong, toned body naked.
"You'll be fine."
The deep voice from behind his shoulder startled Ted, and he spun around in his chair to see Gray leaning against a filing cabinet, his arms crossed over a tight black turtleneck and an encouraging smile on his handsome face. Three gold rings glinted in his right ear.
"If you're really freaked about someone recognising you, I can fuzz the image so nobody sees your face."
Ted rolled his eyes and sighed into his Bluetooth headset. He knew when he was outnumbered. "Fine. I'll do it. But you owe me, Martin. I want an extra week of vacation for this."
