All about Em Woods

Em WoodsAll about little ol' me? Hmm. Okay, the normal stuff first. I currently live in the Midwest near Detroit, Michigan with my husband and two sons who are six and three years old. All three keep me on my toes. I work in the automotive industry making sure all the parts inside the car look pretty along with handling all the paperwork that goes along with that (you'd be amazed at how much I have).

Not so normal stuff now. I am an eclectic soul, having lived in three out of the four corners of the United States. I can count as personal friends people from many walks of life (dare I say, some are family too?). I think this is what allows me to see past the things that make us different to the things that make us alike. Hence, I am a person who will accept anyone for what they are, almost to a fault sometimes.

I love angst (as you very well know if you've read one of my stories). I adore digging into an issue, touching on it and those people it effects, and then giving it a happily-ever-after. Research is probably one of my favorite parts of writing. Finding out new facts, meeting new people while I do that…asking them questions they would never expect.

However, I do not love edits. Contrary to what appears to be my editor's opinion. *wink* Though I do, you know, love my editor.

How Em Woods got into Erotic Romance?

Ooh, I love this question. Once upon a time I frequented the Writer's Digest blog called Promptly (with Zac Petit), practicing my little heart out with five-hundred-word prompts. Let me tell you, if you have a hang up over deleting words or paragraphs because you're attached to your own writing...this is the exercise for you. Wow. Try and write something in five-hundred words that tells a whole story. It's hard. LOL. *ahem* Anyway...I always new that I wanted to write romance, but I blush sitting by myself at the kitchen table, so I figured it would be the tame version.

But one prompt somewhere in November 2009 sparked a hot meet - cute between these two boys on the beach in Hawaii. I wrote the five - hundred words, posted that to WD/P, then kept right on going. One ten - page love scene and a whole slew of blushes later, I had the start to Not Anymore. And, baby, was it erotic. The scene started outside so I couldn't close a door if I wanted. After I got the complete story written, a friend of mine said "hey, let me see if my editor wants to read this", and the rest is TEB history.

The Scoop!

Let's see. I am currently working on a submission for this year's Christmas collection called Graham's Gift. Hopefully TEB likes it enough to snag it. And there is a call out for Men In Uniform stories here so I am working on that one as well with a firefighter story called Only Sam. I also have a M/M paranormal series in the mix tentatively titled The Crossroads Series. It will be four books somewhere between novella and novel length.

On the 10th of every month you can find me on TEB's Hitting The Hotspot blog...

The rest of my time is spent with a wonderful group of writers called The Story Orgy. You can find us on Mondays posting free - read stories on our blogs (start with mine and you can find the links to JR, Hank, Havan & Lee from there - www.authoremwoods.com). As a matter of fact, we just released our first Story Orgy Anthology last month with all profits for the first 90 days after release going to benefit the Trevor Project.

In addition to my blog, you can find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/emwoodsauthor or www.facebook.com/SOGroup , and Twitter, of course, www.twitter.com/emwoodsauthor. If you are a member of GoodReads, you can join me there at www.goodreads.com/emwoods (make sure you check out the M/M Romance Group there!).

What Em Woods likes to read...

Of course I read M/M - my TBR file includes Stephani Hecht, JP Bowie, Ava March, TA Chase, Cameron Dane, Hank Edwards, Amber Kell, and DC Juris. There are so many more that I add to my pile when I can, but these are all auto - buys when they release. Now I just have to find the time to read them!

Ironically, when I read M/F stories, it is always in print books and it's a very short list - Anything by Christine Feehan.

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
There are so many emotions and experiences that writers bring to life on paper (or screen). We have to draw from somewhere, right? Not Anymore was a cathartic writing for me - and I dipped into some dark emotions for that one. Chasing Alex - haven't we all been in that position where you're not saying what you really mean? And because we think everyone else should be a mind reader, things go straight to hell because they're not?

Jack's Way - eh, okay...here I admit I'm in love with cowboys (yes, any cowboy) and wrote this for my own guilty pleasure. Chocolate Dreams - Insecurity turning to a lasting commitment. Impossible to Resist - there are times in everyone's lives where you find the strength to grab hold of what you want, reaching for the brass ring, so to speak. That's where this story comes from.

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
My favourite is usually the one I'm writing at that moment. *grin* Right now that means it is Graham, the best friend from Chasing Alex. He has such a rustic personality and he's very much in need of a soul mate. He just doesn't think so. Which makes him a little cranky when his meant - to - be shows up in a blizzard half frozen to death.

If I had to pick one that sticks with me always, it would be Ben from Jack's Way. I can identify with him in so many ways. He's at a very low point in his life when we meet him so, for me, he is a wonderful reminder that love will find us when we least expect it.

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
I need the bedroom door open. Wide open. I like it hot, explicit...but not vulgar. I don't want to feel like my stomach will revolt just by reading a sex scene. Of course, I'm not crazy about calling a man's cock something like a meat popsicle either. Yes. I've seen that.

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
A few romance authors would site Nora Roberts here, and I like her, but I have to say that when I finish a book by Christine Feehan, I think, "Man, I wanna write like that." Hot, intense, deep.

Fellow M/M authors Hank Edwards, Stephani Hecht and Ava March - all are a true inspiration on what it means to give to fellow writers. They each are excellent storytellers in their own right that I wouldn't mind emulating but they also exude class.

Not sure how many people will know this one, but Dwight Swain (author/instructor) - I was sent in his direction by fellow author Ryssa Edwards, and I can't even begin to say how much I've learned since.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
Characters. Always. I will see a picture, or a person walking by, that I think, "Ooh, I know his story." Then his name will pop up, then I browse the bookstores until a profession makes sense, maybe a house plan for where he lives, where he wants to live, etc...then his mate will arrive (sometimes they arrive together and that's a big ol' mess, let me tell you.). I do the same with him. And then I sit and talk to myself about how they met, what is it that they can't get past...yet, how they accomplish that very thing.

And, yeah, my husband has learned to ignore all these conversations.

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
Don't get stuck on yourself or your writing. There is always room for improvement, and you never know who is going to be the next person to teach you something.

7.Describe your writing space.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm just more complicated than I should be. And questions like this are what get me to wondering. I have a desk in my living room (yep, that's it in that picture there), kinda messy and full of research books. I take notes on everything, and what you see in those binders is what I collected before I realized that my computer had MS OneNote on it. (stroke of genius, that program)

But you kind find me in one of three other places - the kitchen table, outside at the patio table, or at Starbucks. (And hubby just let me buy a new netbook, so my writing is gonna get even more portable! Woot!) One thing you can be sure of, though, is that no matter where I am, you'll find coffee.

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
One or two...*wink*

What or who does your ideal man look like?
Omigod. Hugh Jackman.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
Oh, plenty of them are. Just not mine, darn it. You might say, though, that I have some kickin' friends who are not shy in the least about their exploits. Thank goodness.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
I am one of those women who hates lace. And since I am a country bumpkin at heart, what I like most is a plain white t - shirt and thong. I'm just thankful that my hubby is happy no matter what I'm wearing.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
If a guy has to be dressed, Scrubs. Weird, huh? Otherwise, nothing better on a man than the skin he was born with. *wink*

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
Would you like to hear about the fountain smex at my old college? Or the balcony fun at the apartments off campus?

Nor does it prevent him from yearning for that one man who will crash through those barriers and make Max his in every way.
