All about Saskia Walker

I'm a 43-year-old rock chick. I know, I should be ashamed, but I'm not. Life's too short! I love having fun and dressing up, I have a naughty sense of humour and I'm an incurable optimist. I'm half Irish, half English, and I've lived all over the world. I settled down in Yorkshire with my Real Life Hero, Mark, about eight years ago, and life is good! I've been writing since the mid 90's and I still can't quite believe my dream of being a full time writer came true. I have to pinch myself on a regular basis.
How Saskia got into Erotic Romance
When I started writing in the mid 90s I was dabbling in fantasy and romance, but wasn't sure where best to focus my interests. I knew everything I wrote would have elements of eroticism, but I was drawn to writing erotic genre fiction in particular when I saw the Black Lace editor, Kerri Sharp, on TV. I loved her attitude -- and the fact she was wearing a biker jacket in the office I wrote her a short story. She bought it, and it became my first paid publication. That gave me direction, and it gave me the confidence I needed to begin my writer's journey for real.
The Scoop!
I'm currently working on a trio of contemporary novellas for Spice Briefs, and a historic novella for Total E bound. I have lots of stories busting to be written this year, it's going to be busy! My next novel length, RECKLESS, come out with Berkley Heat in July and I'm very excited about that. All being well, I will be attending the RWA conference in San Francisco and I'll be signing RECKLESS at the Literacy charity event. If you're going to be there, please call by and say hello!
What Saskia likes to read...
My two favourite genres to read are fantasy and erotic romance (and as much cross-over as I can get!) I adore Emma Holly and Portia Da Costa, and in fantasy Storm Constantine and Tanith Lee are amongst my favourites.
INTERVIEW
The Sensible Questions:
-
1. What made you start writing erotic romance?
-
I guess, fundamentally, I'd grown up reading and loving romance, and yet thinking someone had torn the pages out between the part where the hero looms toward the heroine with intent to kiss and ravage her, then cuts to her panting in his arms having discovered the meaning of life. I wanted to fill in the missing pages. I seem to keep doing it over and over again, because I'm enjoying every moment of it. ;-)
- 2. What inspired you to write your first book?
-
My first effort was at age 12, so we'll sweep that one under the carpet. My first proper attempt was the book that became DOUBLE DARE, my first print novel publication. I'd been writing short stories and had a few published, and one day this scene dropped into my head that was so vivid I knew it was part of novel. I had to rush off and type it out. 6 weeks later, incredibly, I had a whole novel. Of course I had to learn to write properly, so that early draft was reworked many times. Every time I learnt something new I went back and applied it to my novel in progress, so that I learnt it in context.
- 3. What's your process for writing a book?
-
Often the set up and setting will come first. For example, in my TEB story, WINNER TAKES ALL, I wanted to write about a couple who were game players, so when it got serious they had to use games to test each other out.
Then I ask myself what kind of protagonist would be in this situation, and I take it from there. With ALONG FOR THE RIDE, I wanted to write a ménage á trois story that was also part road story, where two of the three would fall in love while they helped their friend out. It was about finding a way to play with the ménage set-up, taking three people who are adults enjoying each other, and then throwing them into circumstances where they would very quickly learn how much they cared for each other.
- 4. What do you enjoy about writing?
-
The writing! The actual making things up and creating people who become so solid and real to me I know what they will say and do next. It's such a thrill when a story takes off. I love that.
-
5. What really p's you off about writing?
-
The business side, keeping accounts, being self employed, and I'm very shy about tooting my own horn so doing promotion is hard for me, although I'm getting a tad better with that.
- 6. Who would you count as your biggest supporters?
-
My critique partner, Barbara Sabin, who has been my rock for eleven years, and my Real Life Hero, Mark, who came into my life eight years ago. He really believed in me and encouraged me to go for it. Mark is there every step of the way for me. I consider myself very lucky.
- 7. How do you celebrate when you finish a book?
-
Hmm, interesting question, because I don't usually celebrate finishing a book. I guess I never really feel as if a book is finished. Every other thing in the process - yes, we celebrate big time!
We celebrate acceptances, contracts arriving, book covers, the finished document, sightings, and so on, with bottles of fizz and evenings out. I believe that each occasion should be marked, just as you would celebrate the stepping-stones and events in any job. Otherwise writing can become a treadmill and it's easy to lose sight of the achievement.
-
8. Describe your writing space.
-
My office is in a tiny box room. I was absolutely delighted to find a corner desk at Ikea that fitted the space. It's my little world in there! Lots of inspirational goodies around me, a whiteboard with my deadlines and a wall chart with time blocked off for contracted work. Sometimes I need to take off in my car. I'm lucky in that we live very near the Yorkshire moors, and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, both perfect places to reconnect with nature and the elements and blow the cobwebs away! I take my notepad with me and ponder about my current Work in Progress, or brainstorm a new idea, whatever needs doing.
This is my little office
or 'The Hub' as it's known.

The Naughty Questions:
- 1 How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
-
No toy box, they're just everywhere. Open a drawer, you'll find something. That's all part of the fun.
Especially if one of us gets a hold of the Anaconda, as it is affectionately known. We like a naughty giggle in our house and sex gadgets are sure to arouse that, at the very least
-
2 What or who does your ideal man look like?
-
My ideal man is Mark, and he is sitting opposite me now. However, if he were to run off on me I guess I'd have to replace him with Joaquim Phoenix, or maybe Julian Sands doing his "Warlock" thing. I like intense looking men. Can I have an ideal woman too? If so, it would have to be Amanda Donahoe. I adore her, especially in her "Lair of the White Worm" persona. Ha! She can charm me with her snake dance anyday.
Joaquim Sigh.
Julian Sands. Waiting, on a bed. I'm happy.
Amanda doing her snake dance.
Okay, just one more of Joaquim… I've gone weak at the knees now
-
3 Top or bottom?
-
Yes, please!
- 4 Short shorts or short skirts?
- Oh yeah, I like looking at people wearing those.
You're more likely to find me in black leather trousers or long velvet skirts.
-
5 How would you describe you sex life?
-
It's a lot of fun and I couldn't be happier
-
6 Have any of your toys accidentally gone "public"? Tell us all about it. (We won't tell)
-
Not quite, but... Nearly. Several years ago I won a Silver Dream Machine vibrator from British rock magazine Kerrang (and, yes, the contest question was something about the penis size of a rock star,) and the package had been passed around all my neighbors in the block of flats I lived in at the time, because the flat number had been omitted. Luckily no one had opened it, but I swear they knew... Every time I met one of the neighbours they had that look in their eyes...

What the reviewers are saying
This erotic story will have you hot and bothered right from the beginning, all the way to the end... - Trang, Fallen Angels Reviews
Along For The Ride's strength, I feel, is the warmth and vitality each character brings to the story, with Cal's intense virility, Georgie's brilliant exuberance, and Jason's irresistible masculinity makes this story a fine work of art - Dee, Night Owl Romance.

EXCERPT:
Jason touched Cal lightly on the back as he passed, in a gesture of greeting, before walking over to Georgie. He was a very handsome man, his skin warm and lightly tanned, his features classical, his body firmly muscled and attractive. She could see he was ready for some action; the hunger in his expression was obvious. He looked into her eyes then kissed her on both cheeks, slowly, his hands slowly smoothing her hair back from her face. The brush of his lips across her face and the musky scent of his skin brought a momentary pause to Georgie's breathing. Anticipation forced it on again, more rapidly. Georgie smiled in appreciation and drove the momentary doubts back where they came from in her mind; she wanted this; she knew it was going to be good.
"Hello babe, you're looking good."
"You're looking pretty fit yourself," she replied, feeling very reckless and daring, her pulse rate flying up as she allowed herself to take in the presence of so much testosterone.
Cal watched them negotiating each other. She could see he was looking with his artist's eye, for the painting, but she sensed it was more than that, it was a thrill to him, this, to share his friends, to offer them to one another this way. Her body burned up with a mixture of shame and desire, she was about to display herself in a way that she never had before.
"Should we let him watch?" Jason whispered to her. "We could just tell him to get lost." Humor danced through his expression.
"I doubt you could make him."
Jason chuckled.
"Perhaps you're right."
She glanced at Cal who frowned at them from across the room. She blew him a kiss. Jason closed on her, kissing her neck as she looked into Calvin's eyes. Power surged through her veins. This was going to be good, she knew it.

EXCERPT:
He told her he wanted to buy her a pair of thigh-high, stiletto-heeled boots, just to wear in bed.
Tina was close to coming at that point anyway, but the idea of wearing such a delectable sex accessory pushed her right to the edge.
"Thigh-high?" she replied, as nonchalantly as she could, under the circumstances.
Shaun nodded
"To wear in bed?"
He nodded again, his smile turning wickedly suggestive.
Tina was on her back at the time. Shaun was pivoting against her with her legs thrown over his shoulders. Her feet--strappy high-heeled sandals still on--were locked behind him, fixing his agile body so that the head of his cock wedged against the front wall of her sex to bring her off. He was fully dressed. Her stockings and dress also remained on. In their desperation to take each other all that had been stripped off were her French lace knickers.
"Well," he said, pausing on his thrusts inside her, "do you like the idea?" He was holding back on her, as if his next thrust depended on her answer.
She bit into her lower lip, trying not to moan out loud, her body hungry and desperate for the crest of pleasure that more contact would bring.
"Go for it," she said, feigning self-control. She'd already figured he was the type of man who liked a challenge, and she was right. Shaun always did go for it.
He began to move again, riding her fast, going for the prize, locking eyes with her, and urging her on all the while. When she came, she bit the back of her wrist to stop herself from crying aloud. He groaned. His body seized, then let rip with a succession of grinding thrusts, finishing with a deep roar.
Suffused with heat and suddenly languid, she stared up at him as she tried to ground herself. Her emotions were hopelessly tangled. Something about Shaun made her angry and lustful all at once. This was all a game to him, a challenge. That's all she represented. They were both independent sorts, but at times like this she wanted to slap him for his bravado and cheek, and yet she also wanted to draw him close and hold him tight, for the very same reason.
As he gasped to regain his breath, she pushed his body away from her; afraid she might say the wrong thing, her unsteady emotions unnerving her.
But he grabbed one of her ankles as she lowered her leg to the bed, and took her foot to his mouth, stroked its outline and the enclosure of straps and then kissed the tip of her big toe, smiling at her in the most suggestive way.
While her body burned up in the aftermath of their passions she asked herself why? Why was she drawn to this man, this strange loner who taunted and challenged her so? She would walk away if she could, but the desire she felt ran deep and torrid, and it was undeniable.

EXCERPT:
Dropping into a squat, he pulled her knickers down her legs, moving slowly, excruciating slowly, glancing up at her suggestively as her pussy was bared.
"If you take much more time over this task we'll never leave the cabin." She stepped out of her knickers and into the bloomers that he held out for her.
"Oh yes we will, I am just savouring you, my darling."
When the bloomers and stockings were in place he held open her boots for her to step into, and then did up the tiny buttons while she stood there, one hand on her hip, amused at her own reflection in the mirror-”bare breasted, in diaphanous Victorian bloomers. The best part was the gorgeous man at her feet, her lover, her soul mate, seeing to her needs. "You do realise I'll be thinking of this moment every time I have to put these things on in the future," she said, stroking his head.
"Good," he replied, with a grin.
He looked so gorgeous, she ached for him, longing for the moment when he finally gave in and made love to her. Max was so much more patient than she was, but she knew he was right, this was going to be fun.
Standing up, he reached for the corset. Positioning her in front of the mirror, he stood behind her, reaching around to slide the corset into position. She watched him, admiring his reflection when he glanced at her over her shoulder. As he began to pull the laces tight, she drew in her breath. She always got a slight rush from this experience-”together with an ongoing buzz from the constraint and the pressure the delicious article of clothing applied to her body, restricting her lungs, pressing down on her womb. It emphasised her femininity both visually, and physically.
"This look suits you so well." He clasped his hands around her waist as he admired her.
She didn't reply. There was something about this kind of underwear that was bawdy, she felt more like a bordello whore than a chaste Victorian lady. The gap in the bloomers made her feel naked down there, easily accessible at her most imitate place, while the corset pushed everything up and on display.
He turned her in his arms, and then ran his fingers over her cleavage, where her breasts plumped up by the corset to peep over the edge naughtily, Nell Gwyn-style.
"Just a hint of nipple," he said, brushing his finger over her left breast, "just the way I like it."
