All about Kim Dare

Kim DareKim Dare has just turned 28. She started writing when she was 9. That first story was about two wolves falling in love and living happily ever after. Apparently the only thing that's changed in the last 19 years is that her wolves are a lot kinkier than they were back then!

Kim still lives in the same small town where she was born. Forget sky scrapers - It's the kind of place where the church spire is still the tallest thing, bar the mountains. Yes, Kim is from the Welsh valleys - with an accent to prove it.

In 2008 Kim finished the first year of two different degree courses (one arts, one science - decisiveness isn't one of her strong points, luckily multi - tasking is!) and decided to take a break from studying to see if she could make a go of a career in writing.

Since her first book was published in December 2008, Kim has written 50 titles and now writes full time. One day she will finish those degrees, but right now she is having far too much fun to take that much time out from her writing!

How Kim Dare got into Erotic Romance?

I spent a long time trying to write the kind of books I thought people wanted to read, but they never went well. The characters who lived inside my head never seemed to want to co - operate. In hindsight, that's probably because those stories were kind of boring!

One day, I decided to stop trying to write something "publishable". I let the characters have free reign and followed wherever they led. It turns out that most of the people who live in my mind are gay and kinky.

I was pretty sure the stories I wrote then would never be published, but I loved writing them so much, I didn't want to stop. A little bit of internet research later, I finally stumbled upon this thing called M/M erotic romance. Apparently there were other people writing the same kind of stories, and there were people out there who wanted to read them, too!

I decided to send a story off and see what happened. I've never looked back.

The Scoop!

I'm currently working on two series with Total-E-bound. The Perfect Timing Series and the Collared Series. The latter has been sadly neglected while I've been working on other things, but I'm hoping to revive it soon!

You can keep up with what I've got going on each month via my newsletter on my website - http://www.kimdare.com

What Kim Dare likes to read...

I don't really read erotic romance. You're more likely to find me reading Terry Pratchett, for comedy and fantasy, or Georgette Heyer for old fashioned romance. I also really enjoy poetry - Sophie Hannah and Rudyard Kipling are current favourites - I have a weakness for poetry that rhymes!

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
I write from the heart and about the kind of romance that feels right and natural to me. I don't write kink because it's taboo or because it sells well. I write it because vanilla dynamics really don't make any sense to me.

Apart from that, the biggest affect my life has on my writing is a slightly strange one. I have ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. That involves long periods of being too tired to do anything but lay in a dark silent room, yet still being unable to sleep. Making up stories passes the time. I've had ME for 15 years - that's a lot of stories. It's made me strangely prolific!

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
I still have a soft spot for Eric. He was the submissive in the first story I ever had accepted - Turquoise and Leather - and he still has the power to make me smile every time I think about him. He really came to life and took over the story. Poor George, I don't think he had a chance!

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
My characters go where they go and do whatever they want to do when they get there. I don't have that much control over how often they have sex or how kinky they get in the process, lol. I'm pretty happy writing any heat level, but most of the stories seem to end up being rated Total-E-burning.

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
I met a fantastic author called Bronwyn Green just after my first story was accepted. She really took me under her wing and helped me find my feet in the genre. She's also become a great friend. She's been incredibly supportive and a fantastic influence - I don't think I'd be where I am today without her.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
Characters, or more usually a piece of dialogue that one of the characters will say, tends to come first. Then I work out who would say that, who they'd say it to, why they'd say it and what kind of prior relationship would lead to that point. It all builds up from that one little snippet.

Strangely enough, the actual bit of dialogue often fails to make it through pre - submission edits, so it doesn't always feature in the finished book.

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
You can't please all of the people all of the time! I tried for quite a while and almost drove myself insane. There will be bad reviews, there will be people who hate my books. I've come to accept that as par for the course.

Now, I write the story my characters need to experience and just hope for the best. On bad days, I remind myself of a quote I really love - It's better to be hated for who you are, than be loved for who you're not.

I am the kind of writer I am. I don't apologise for that any more.

7.Describe your writing space.
I'm completely spoilt with my writing space! You might also notice that I have a slightly obsessive streak when it comes to organisation, lol.

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
I've just bought my own house. Think less "toy - box" and more "playroom"...

What or who does your ideal man look like?
Someone confident and at ease in his own skin. Looks don't matter that much to me, attitude is much more important.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
Of course - all of them are! I'll admit it was hard work tracking down the vampires and werewolves to take part in some of them, but I think it was certainly worth it in the end.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
None at all? Although, if a certain formality is required, a black leather collar and lead could be arranged.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
See the first answer above! Although, if clothing isn't optional, a pair of blue jeans and nothing else also works for me.

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, I never kiss and tell!

An untrained submissive might not be what George wants, but Eric could be just what George needs.

George McAllister knows better than to hook up with an untrained submissive. He doesn't have the patience to guide a novice through his first kinky experiences. His lovers know what they are doing and do what they are told. When he sees Eric dancing on top of a table in a kinky club, he assumes the beautiful young man is an experienced submissive. Then he sees the turquoise and leather on his neck and recognises it as a collar. Someone else already owns Eric. George has no choice but to walk away.

Eric Jordan doesn't know much about kink and he has no idea why George is suddenly less than enthusiastic. But he knows what he wants and if he has to chase after George to get it, so be it. If George wants to believe the pretty bit of rock on his necklace means something kinky, that's fine. But Eric doesn't belong to anyone but himself and he won't give up possession of himself for one night in George's bed.

An untrained submissive might not be what George wants, but he could be just what George needs.

They have just one more night together before they have to lose each other forever. All they can do now, is make the most of it.

Book one in the G-A-Y Series

Find a gay man in a gay bar. Matt's sure that should be a lot easier than it actually is.

Matt's having a run of bad luck - one that's lasted ever since he stepped out of the closet. An uncanny ability to home in on the only straight guy in a bar room full of gay men really isn't doing his sex life any favours. A knack for picking complete jerks whenever he does stumble upon a genuinely gay man isn't helping either.

But, this time everything is going to be different. This time Matt's absolutely sure his gaydar has guided him towards a completely sane, entirely gay man - which is why he's arranged to meet him in the gents' room in five minutes.

What could possibly go wrong?
