All about Lily Harlem

Lily HarlemI live in the UK with my husband and several pets including an incredibly fat cat, Rupert, who sits on my lap and keeps me warm during the cold winter months. Before picking up a career in writing I worked as a nurse in London, spending most of my time in the Emergency Department. During these years I worked hard and played hard, definitely burning the candle at both ends, and this is where I met the love of my life who was also working hard (and still does) and married him two years later.

Now I live in the countryside and enjoy a slower pace of life, which includes walking on the beach with my dog, spending time pottering around my cottage garden and searching markets for new trinkets for my home which has become a constant work in progress.

I love to travel with Mr H and with girlfriends and I have recently been to Thailand and the US. I find it hard to choose between lying on a beach with a cocktail in Phuket or belting around 5th Avenue rocketing up the credit card bill! It's all so much fun. Now that writing has gripped me I can't imagine doing anything else, there wouldn't be time, I simply have too many stories waiting to spill out of my head onto the laptop.

How Lily Harlem got into Erotic Romance?

I kind of stumbled across my genre. I'd been doing a creative writing course at university, part time as something to do when we had moved from the city, and I had a huge pile of assignments, a real collection of short stories in all manner of styles and which sat in many different genres. I decided since I'd spent so many hours on them I'd see if I could enter some into competitions, or even submit for publication.

While I was trawling the internet for suitable publishers etc I came across a competition sponsored by Love Honey (an on-line sex shop). They wanted a steamy short story to get them all hot under the collar, something down and dirty, raunchy and rude. Well, I'd never written anything like that, it just wasn't on the syllabus of my course, but, it was a quiet Sunday afternoon, and I decided to have a go. Well, I blushed and squirmed the whole way through writing Madam President, but I completely adored the finished product, checked for typos and hit send. I didn't think much more about it until I got a phone call a month later saying I had won first place!!!! I was overjoyed and realized that I had found my niche - erotic romance. You can read Madam President for FREE on my website.

The Scoop!

The big thing I've been doing lately is a co-author with the fabulous Natalie Dae. We've been good friends for a while, always have a really crazy, non-stop natter about writing (and everything else) when we get together, and after beta reading several of each other's books, we decided to have a bash at writing one together. Our styles were similar and we hoped they would complement one another. Natalie kicked started it in her wonderfully eloquent style and then we took turns at bashing out the scenes. It quite literally poured from us, we both had so many ideas and the incredibly loving but also obscenely rude couple who are the stars of the novel just kept calling to us for more!!

When it was written we pondered on a title, many ideas were bounced around, but finally, we settled on the phrase we'd been using when talking about our project, it just seemed to fit so well, sum up exactly what was in those pages, so it is now called, officially, That Filthy Book. Keep an eye on Total-E-Bound's websites for news of its release.

What Lily Harlem likes to read...

Of course I have to say Natalie Dae, not because she's my friend, but because she is so sublimely talented and seems to have an endless well of juicy ideas.

I also adore Kristina Lloyd - particularly Asking For Trouble. Justine Elyot and Lisabet Sarai. Many a time I have dipped happily into a raunchy Maya Banks or Lora Leigh.

As a rule I enjoy contemporary stuff, I like it rude, BDSM is great, but I also like some sweetness too.

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
I would say definitely so. Working in a busy hospital department meant I met so many different people from all walks of life so it's impossible for some of them not to have stayed with me when it comes to my characters.

Also I think having a whole gaggle of nurses and doctors as friends who were always up to something, partying, having relationships - disastrous and successful - getting into fixes, has given me a bank of situations and dilemmas to call on for inspiration. I still love catching up with the old gang, there is always steamy gossip.

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
I adore Kat from Thief. She is so self-obsessed, so independent, or so she likes to think, because there are many different layers to her and as I created her I couldn't help but admire her despite the fact that she is an immoral, thieving, liar. Luckily, John, my hero in the book, also manages, eventually, to see through the veneer she has built around herself.

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
Oh, the hotter the better. I love it steamy, saucy and a little bit different. I'm not massively into writing about dungeons and chains, that's been done lots of times and I enjoy reading it, I like ordinary couples, in ordinary settings having extraordinary sexual experiences.

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
Probably some of the classics like Hemmingway for example, who never wrote something down unless it was relevant to the plot or the character. I try to keep that in mind to prevent waffle when I write.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
Neither, I am a bit of scene girl. I have a situation in my head, a scene or two, vivid and real with characters and sex, and work a plot around it. How did they get there, why is that so intense and special for them, how would they move forward from it?

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
That some people will love my books and other won't. I had two comments on Goodreads recently about the same novella...

"This story is disturbing on so many levels."

And...

"Hot, hot, hot, I didn't want it to end."

Just goes to show you can't please all of the people all of the time.

7.Describe your writing space.
Pretty and relaxed, girly and romantic. I have an amazing view over my back garden and onto the meadows beyond which are full of ponies, sheep, wild geese and badgers. Sometimes I sit and stare for hours as stories rattle around my head, slotting themselves into place. It's very soothing, living somewhere so peaceful after the constant sounds, smells and busyness of London.

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
Couldn't give you an accurate answer because the collection is constantly growing.

What or who does your ideal man look like?
I like a man to look like a man. I'm not opposed so some prettiness, I can appreciate it, but the should -have-shaved look, big wide shoulders and an absolute lack of vanity really works for me. Here are some pics of hotties I could sit and stare at, quite happily, for a while....oh, and did I mention I have a complete obsession about male armpits. Phew, I'm getting hot thinking about them!!

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
Mmm, maybe not whole scenes, but definitely elements, and certainly feelings and emotions that go with some acts.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
If I am going to a party, a dress, something little and pretty, in the bedroom, well, nice underwear, black usually, stockings too.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
I have a real thing for black roll necks. I don't know why, but a guy in jeans and a black sweater that fits him nice, stretched across a broad chest and skims a neat, muscular back, really gets me flushed in the winter. I must have had a yummy experience way back when to have that as a particular thing, needless to say Mr H has a good collection of black sweaters, all bought by me!

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
I'm never naughty - ha - of course I am, but it would be telling really. I guess though, if I have to say something, it would be saying I'm in one place and going somewhere else to my parents when I was a teenager. I did that a LOT!
