All about Desiree Holt

Desiree Holt I always knew I wanted to write. My mother said I was great at making up stories, especially the time when I was twelve and told everyone in our little town I was going to Hollywood to be in a movie. So far the closest I've gotten is YouTube! I collected a lot of experiences along the way - managing rock bands, sports reporter, special events planner, and a few unmentionables. My ideas usually come to me in the shower. I've been known to sit down at the keyboard still dripping into my terry robe because I just had to get that idea on paper. But usually when I start a book I have the hero and heroine and some vague idea of where I'm going. If I get stumped, I just take another shower!

How Desiree got into Erotic Romance

My husband, who is a true alpha male in every respect - and in every room of the house - dared me. He said, why not write about something you really enjoy. If you love to read about it, you should certainly love to write about it. And then he promised me a little surprise when I sold my first one. That was enough to keep me going!

The Scoop!

Right now I'm busy writing, writing, writing. You can always find me at Novel sisterhood, and popping in and out of Love romances Café, Ellora's Cave chat, Night Owl Romances and other sites where erotic romance authors gather to chat with their friends. I'll be at the Romantic Times Booklovers convention April 15-20 in Pittsburgh. If you're anywhere in the area, please come and meet me. And you can always check out my schedule on my web site - www.desireeholt.com

What Desiree likes to read...

I pretty much read anything, but I'll read everything by Carol Lynne, Lora Leigh, Robyn Carr, Shiloh Walker, Rhyannon Byrd, Christine Feehan, Brynn Paulin, Cindy Spencer Pape and Lacey Thorn. They're my comfort readers.

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1. What made you start writing erotic romance?
I began reading erotic romance because two of the members of my RWA chapter were published ER authors and I wanted to read their work. I discovered a whole new genre and began buying as fast as the budget would let me. My husband insisted I try my hand at writing a short erotic story and the first two sold right away. What really tipped the scales in my favour was a full-length I was working on that was really stalled. As soon as I turned it into a hot, erotic romantic suspense, it practically wrote itself.
2. What inspired you to write your first book?
The very first book I wrote, a romantic suspense, sensual but not erotic, was inspired by a Linda Howard book I read that changed the way I read and write. I guess it just took off from there. And of course there's the shower, my own personal think tank.
3. What's your process for writing a book?
Oh, God, I wish I had a real process. I get an idea and a hero and heroine. I build the plot around them. I make myself write a one-page synopsis and create a character chart, otherwise I find my characters from one book showing up in another they have no relationship to! I write during the day, make notes at night, etc, but force myself not to really edit until I reach the end.
4. What do you enjoy about writing?
Everything except the editing. I'm so bad at it. But I love creating characters and fanciful stories and putting myself into them. I live each of my books.
5. What really p's you off about writing?
When someone doesn't "get" it. My sister, bless her, hates every one of my heroines. I finally told her to stop reading my books. LOL!
6. Who would you count as your biggest supporters?
My family, without a doubt. My son even uses the line: "My mother writes erotic romances" as a pickup line. He says it works!
7. How do you celebrate when you finish a book?
A romantic interlude with my wonderful, wonderful husband. Don't ever let anyone tell you romance fades with age. It only gets better.
8. Describe your writing space.
I have a very large computer desk built into one wall of the family room, with plenty of book shelves and drawers, and a little television on one shelf. I can't write in absolute quiet. I have two secret passions - Toby Keith music and Steven Seagal music, so it's one or the other. And everything I need is right at hand.

The Naughty Questions:

1 How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
My toy box has grown from a shoe box to a double carton. And Barbie would faint and fall out if she saw MY toys. If you want to know what kind of toys I have, read my stories!
2 What or who does your ideal man look like?
He's gotta have warm brown eyes. I fell in love with my husband's eyes first. Oh, and of course, certain parts of his anatomy have to exceed my expectations. I've attached a picture of the man I stared at writing my first erotic romance, Cupid's Shaft.

3 Top or bottom?
You mean if it's just him and me right?

4 Short shorts or short skirts?
neither!

5 How would you describe you sex life?
We could make Hugh Heffner blush. Where do you think I get the ideas for my stories? My husband says we have research dates.

6 Have any of your toys accidentally gone "public"? Tell us all about it. (We won't tell)
OMG-I'll never forget the time we were having our carpets cleaned, our younger daughter was still living with us and she pulled our toy box out from under our bed. I think she blushed for a week.
