All about Devon Rhodes

Devon RhodesYes, I was like many writers-the typical bookworm kid. I worked in healthcare for a long time up till I started having kids, then did the stay-at-home thing until I was climbing the walls. One day I was reading a book and had the thought that I could write a better story...and the rest is history. I'm also a freelance editor in my "spare" time...yeah right. Between editing, writing and my two girls, I'm lucky if I have any time at all. Insomnia comes in handy...all those extra hours at night.

How Devon Rhodes got into Erotic Romance?

Mid-life crisis? When I started writing, I was reading E-Rom and paranormal stuff almost exclusively, so naturally that's what I tried first. I was lucky enough to have some great mentors within the genre who beta-read my early works for me and nearly made me cry with the revisions. (I think Ava March would be the best editor in the world if she wasn't busy writing!) But they helped me see what I needed to do to improve my work and from that point on, nearly everything I've written has been published (including what she ripped to pieces)!

The Scoop!

I had a blast at the GayRomLit Retreat in New Orleans in October, so much so that I've made plans to attend the 2012 Authors After Dark convention in August right back in the Big Easy. I'll also be at the next GRL Retreat in Albuquerque.

In the meantime, I'm working on several projects. I have three sequels or series I'm writing a new books for: the third and fourth books in Vampires and Mages and Weres, Oh My!, the third One Wish series book, and the sequel to Rough Riders. I also have a MF paranormal I'm expanding to novel length and almost have done.

My next release is part of the His Hero uniforms antho, which will be released at TEB this month, with the single release of my story, A Ring and A Promise, coming out in February.

What Devon Rhodes likes to read...

Fact is, between my own writing and editing, I rarely have time to read, so I treasure my downtime and make sure to use it on books and authors I really want to read! I've gone through a lot of stages, but right now I read mostly paranormal and MM. I also get the mood for fantasy and sci-fi at times, and appreciate a good historical-though that's one genre I won't ever try to write. Too much research!

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
'Write what you know' is an old adage and it's very true...especially if you want to avoid having to do a lot of research, lol! So many past experiences, settings and situations come through in my stories. I've written pets, kids, parents, friends, college...all of which I have personal experience with. I've been to forty-six states and nine provinces, which I think helps me make North American settings realistic. Incidentally, a friend of mine recently told me that my writing sounds like the way I tell a story aloud. I was afraid to ask whether that was a good thing or a bad thing!

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
Yikes. That's like asking which of my kids I love best. I'd like to go on record as saying I'm answering this under duress. One of my favourites is Raine from A Pint Light. He's loyal and snarky and not afraid to stand up for himself. I'm working on a story right now in which Raine makes an appearance, so he's fresh in my mind. You'll definitely see more from him.

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
I like it pretty burning hot because I feel like I can be "real" with how I write the scene. Fade-to-black and sweet just don't lend themselves to the kind of detail I create in my head, so when I have to tone it down, I feel like I'm leaving out the best part of the scene!

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
Stephen King, of course, as well as other authors like Anne McCaffrey and Jean Auel who have incredible worldbuilding skills. Love the heat of authors such as Bertrice Small, Samantha Kane and Kate Pearce. Always admired the secondary character development of Iris Johansen and Kay Hooper.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
Usually I envision a scene and go from there. That scene can sometimes be driven from a character who came strongly to me (books where this happened include A Detour Home, Pride and Joey, Making His List, Remarkable Restraint), or occasionally from a title that pops into my head (A Pint Light, Silver and Gold, Rough Riders).

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
Don't forget to write. It's easy to get distracted by networking, marketing, editing, blogging, plotting, etc. But if you're not putting words on screen, you'll never get anything written. Simple but all too true.

7.Describe your writing space.
I have a chair and ottoman that I got free from a hotel I used to manage after they reconfigured rooms. I sit in the downstairs office, chair facing the glassed door, with my laptop on my lap (or occasionally on the ottoman). I have a bookshelf by me with my books, paperwork, etc, and an end table (also a hotel castoff) for my ever-present cup of coffee. Of course, I sometimes take the show on the road, but as long as I have internet and a place to put up my feet (and set my coffee), I'm good to go. And I don't listen to music as a rule, though I can tune stuff out if I have to. I mean...I'm a mom. I haz skilz.

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
I prefer quality over quantity so let's just say a few...

What or who does your ideal man look like?
I love men. I mean, lots of men. Love everything about them, and there's more than one "type" that trips my trigger. There are a few here that really lift my brows...so to speak. But to generalize, I love tall, fit, athletic, dark-haired guys with awesome smiles.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
Oh sure, but I'm not telling which ones! Though many of my long-time readers know that the sleepwalking scenes in Neighbors By Day, Naughty By Night are based on my own nocturnal wanderings in college.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
I like wearing form-fitting, yet comfortable clothing. And since I'm pretty short, a bit of a heel helps my confidence.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
I'm a big fan of faded jeans riding low on the hips...and a smile.

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
Hmm, well the top five are going to have to stay under lock and key. But I once 'messed up' hotel reservations on purpose so that a co-worker and I had to share a room...and a bed.

Book one in the Vampires & Mages & Werewolves Oh My! Series

Valerian stole Raine's blood, his magic...and his heart.

What's a vampire to do when every day is the same old dull quest for blood? Head to Maui, of course. But before Valerian can hit the beach, he needs to get rid of the sultry mage seducing him in his sleep. She may have fooled his subconscious, but he doesn't need a mate complicating his life. Imagine Val's shock when he finds out she's a he, yet still has the power to arouse him beyond anything he'd ever imagined.

Raine faints at the sight of blood and isn't looking forward to being a vamp's chew toy. Still, family duty calls, and Valerian turns out to be the hottest, and most powerful, male on two legs. Raine is crushed when the sexy vamp of his dreams runs from their rough play in horror. But his pride can't stand in the way when Valerian accidently steals his magic along with his blood.

Now, with time running out, Raine needs to seduce him one last time to even up the score, and maybe this time, they'll exchange more than blood and power. Magic is in the air, and sometimes love only needs a little nudge.

What the reviewers are saying

"...I'd go so far as to say that A Pint Light is an appetizer, something meant to tempt and tease the palate. It's very satisfying and supremely enjoyable, but you know that this is only a taste of the banquet yet to come. And personally I hope that there's a LOT more to come from the mind and wonderful creative imagination of Devon Rhodes... Soon please..." -Dark Divas Reviews

Vance thought his pride meant everything to him...until fate sent Joey into his lair and into his heart.

Vance grew up the odd one out in a macho and very insular pride of lion shifters. Differences like enjoying the cool fall weather are bad enough-his pridemates would kill him if they learned he was gay. Still, his pride is all he knows. He'd never even met a shifter of another type...until he discovers an unconscious cougar male in his lair.

Joey is on the run and wants to keep Vance at arm's length, especially since someone very close to the lion is the root of all his troubles. But there is something irresistible about Vance, something which has Joey wanting more than he ever dared to dream.

When their lives are threatened, Joey must choose whether to sacrifice himself, or try to live and keep Vance close...for the very short remainder of his life.

What the reviewers are saying

"4.5 out of 5! For such a short story, it was sure packed with a lot of great characters and a strong plot...From beginning to end it pulled me in and held me by my throat until the last page." -Whipped Cream
