All about Devon Rhodes
Yes, I was like many writers-the typical bookworm kid. I worked in healthcare for a long time up till I started having kids, then did the stay-at-home thing until I was climbing the walls. One day I was reading a book and had the thought that I could write a better story...and the rest is history. I'm also a freelance editor in my "spare" time...yeah right. Between editing, writing and my two girls, I'm lucky if I have any time at all. Insomnia comes in handy...all those extra hours at night. How Devon Rhodes got into Erotic Romance?
Mid-life crisis? When I started writing, I was reading E-Rom and paranormal stuff almost exclusively, so naturally that's what I tried first. I was lucky enough to have some great mentors within the genre who beta-read my early works for me and nearly made me cry with the revisions. (I think Ava March would be the best editor in the world if she wasn't busy writing!) But they helped me see what I needed to do to improve my work and from that point on, nearly everything I've written has been published (including what she ripped to pieces)! The Scoop!
I had a blast at the GayRomLit Retreat in New Orleans in October, so much so that I've made plans to attend the 2012 Authors After Dark convention in August right back in the Big Easy. I'll also be at the next GRL Retreat in Albuquerque. In the meantime, I'm working on several projects. I have three sequels or series I'm writing a new books for: the third and fourth books in Vampires and Mages and Weres, Oh My!, the third One Wish series book, and the sequel to Rough Riders. I also have a MF paranormal I'm expanding to novel length and almost have done.My next release is part of the His Hero uniforms antho, which will be released at TEB this month, with the single release of my story, A Ring and A Promise, coming out in February.http://www.total-e-bound.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=&P_ID=1506 What Devon Rhodes likes to read...
Fact is, between my own writing and editing, I rarely have time to read, so I treasure my downtime and make sure to use it on books and authors I really want to read! I've gone through a lot of stages, but right now I read mostly paranormal and MM. I also get the mood for fantasy and sci-fi at times, and appreciate a good historical-though that's one genre I won't ever try to write. Too much research!
INTERVIEWThe Sensible Questions:- 1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
- 'Write what you know' is an old adage and it's very true...especially if you want to avoid having to do a lot of research, lol! So many past experiences, settings and situations come through in my stories. I've written pets, kids, parents, friends, college...all of which I have personal experience with. I've been to forty-six states and nine provinces, which I think helps me make North American settings realistic. Incidentally, a friend of mine recently told me that my writing sounds like the way I tell a story aloud. I was afraid to ask whether that was a good thing or a bad thing!
- 2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
- Yikes. That's like asking which of my kids I love best. I'd like to go on record as saying I'm answering this under duress. One of my favourites is Raine from A Pint Light. He's loyal and snarky and not afraid to stand up for himself. I'm working on a story right now in which Raine makes an appearance, so he's fresh in my mind. You'll definitely see more from him.
- 3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
- I like it pretty burning hot because I feel like I can be "real" with how I write the scene. Fade-to-black and sweet just don't lend themselves to the kind of detail I create in my head, so when I have to tone it down, I feel like I'm leaving out the best part of the scene!
- 4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
- Stephen King, of course, as well as other authors like Anne McCaffrey and Jean Auel who have incredible worldbuilding skills. Love the heat of authors such as Bertrice Small, Samantha Kane and Kate Pearce. Always admired the secondary character development of Iris Johansen and Kay Hooper.
- 5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
- Usually I envision a scene and go from there. That scene can sometimes be driven from a character who came strongly to me (books where this happened include A Detour Home, Pride and Joey, Making His List, Remarkable Restraint), or occasionally from a title that pops into my head (A Pint Light, Silver and Gold, Rough Riders).
- 6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
- Don't forget to write. It's easy to get distracted by networking, marketing, editing, blogging, plotting, etc. But if you're not putting words on screen, you'll never get anything written. Simple but all too true.
- 7.Describe your writing space.
- I have a chair and ottoman that I got free from a hotel I used to manage after they reconfigured rooms. I sit in the downstairs office, chair facing the glassed door, with my laptop on my lap (or occasionally on the ottoman). I have a bookshelf by me with my books, paperwork, etc, and an end table (also a hotel castoff) for my ever-present cup of coffee. Of course, I sometimes take the show on the road, but as long as I have internet and a place to put up my feet (and set my coffee), I'm good to go. And I don't listen to music as a rule, though I can tune stuff out if I have to. I mean...I'm a mom. I haz skilz.

The Naughty Questions:
- How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
- I prefer quality over quantity so let's just say a few...
- What or who does your ideal man look like?
- I love men. I mean, lots of men. Love everything about them, and there's more than one "type" that trips my trigger. There are a few here that really lift my brows...so to speak. But to generalize, I love tall, fit, athletic, dark-haired guys with awesome smiles.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?Oh sure, but I'm not telling which ones! Though many of my long-time readers know that the sleepwalking scenes in Neighbors By Day, Naughty By Night are based on my own nocturnal wanderings in college. What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?I like wearing form-fitting, yet comfortable clothing. And since I'm pretty short, a bit of a heel helps my confidence. What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?I'm a big fan of faded jeans riding low on the hips...and a smile. What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?Hmm, well the top five are going to have to stay under lock and key. But I once 'messed up' hotel reservations on purpose so that a co-worker and I had to share a room...and a bed.

Still, family duty calls, and Valerian turns out to be the hottest, and most powerful, male on two legs. Raine is crushed when the sexy vamp of his dreams runs from their rough play in horror. Magic is in the air, and sometimes love only needs a little nudge. What the reviewers are saying"...I'd go so far as to say that A Pint Light is an appetizer, something meant to tempt and tease the palate. It's very satisfying and supremely enjoyable, but you know that this is only a taste of the banquet yet to come. And personally I hope that there's a LOT more to come from the mind and wonderful creative imagination of Devon Rhodes... Soon please..." - Dark Divas Reviews Read An Excerpt:[Click here to expand/collapse]EXCERPT:Val's body saw the possibilities here immediately, and his morning erection perked up at the oh-so warm pressure. However, that reaction exacerbated a different problem, one that was even more delicate given the circumstances. Normally, Valerian had almost complete control of his need to feed. But for some reason, his iron will melted away in Raine's presence. He knew, knew that even broaching the subject right now was the worst thing that he could do. But after what happened last time, he was afraid giving into his increasingly burning desire would trigger another frenzied attack. His hands rose of their own accord and settled on Raine's morning-warm skin, just above the elastic waist of his boxer briefs. Val closed his eyes and savoured the feel of Raine's cock aligned with his, holding onto Raine in counter-pressure while circling his hips upwards in little thrusts. With only the thin material of their briefs between them, Val could feel the heat of Raine's shaft, the moist warmth of the growing spot of pre-cum soaking into the fabric. He imagined the smooth heat of the skin hidden from view, and suddenly couldn't wait another minute to feel that weight in his palm. His slid his hands smoothly, fingers first, under the waistband and down Raine's hips, his thumbs learning Raine's hipbones in passing before he reached around to cup his firm, bare buttocks."This is where things got out of control last time, wouldn't you agree?"Val's eyes flew open at the unexpected and incredibly coherent question. He tried to get his brain to formulate an answer, but couldn,t manage more than, "Uh.."Raine sighed heavily, "I can see that I'm going to have to have conversations with you before you're turned on. Obviously, all the blood must leave your big head when you're aroused or something."Val couldn't agree more. He could barely process what Raine was saying, only revelling in the fact that he was still sitting on top of Val's pulsing cock. He continued to push up against Raine, now trying in earnest to remove Raine's tight briefs without letting him move off his cock, an impossible task, unless he were to rip them...He turned thought into deed, and three yanks later, the briefs were in tatters and Raine's erection popped up, slapping against his own belly, leaving a dab of pre-cum behind. Before he even consciously decided to, he reached out and rubbed the spot off with the pad of his thumb, bringing it to his mouth for a lick. He watched those celadon eyes darken with desire as Raine focused on Val's tongue sliding over his thumb, cleaning it of Raine's cum.The musky, briny taste, with the same notes as Raine's amazing blood, hit his senses like a shot of adrenaline. Val reacted without thought, flipping Raine over, grinding down against him as he reversed their positions."If you're going to nail me with those teeth again, you're going to have to let me suck you off first. Take it or leave it." Through The Red Door - Genre: Paranormal/ Shapeshifters/Morphers/ Gay MM

Strong, handsome Seth is a godsend, making him feel safe and secure. But he alludes to secrets that will test everything Kyrian believes...and turns the tables on just who needs protecting. What the reviewers are saying"I loved this story! This is the first book I've read in this series, but I plan to add the upcoming releases to my list of future reads. Action, suspense and erotic scenes designed to make you squirm are awaiting you in Through the Red Door." - Literary Nymphs Reviews Read An Excerpt:[Click here to expand/collapse]EXCERPT:Kyrian watched with keen interest as the high-strung agent practically shoved the potential buyer out the door. He couldn't stifle a chuckle as a strange wince of discomfort crossed the man's face.Oooh, not nice, Kyrian. You'd better watch it. One of these days you're going to laugh at the wrong person. It was his worst fault unfortunately, schadenfreude, which had caused him no end of trouble over the years. He just couldn't help laughing at inappropriate times. An automatic reaction to anything unusual. His victim whipped around, and for a moment, Kyrian thought his day of reckoning had actually come. But the dangerous, feral glint in those dark eyes changed in quick succession to shock then something like distaste.A born people-pleaser, Kyrian felt a stab of disappointment at the look of disdain. He glanced down at himself in reflex to check his appearance. Nothing obviously out of place. He was actually dressed fairly nicely for a day at home. Maybe the guy just didn't like shaggy hair. He was very clean-cut, bordering militaristic in his grooming, severely shaped almost black hair with a hint of wave to it above a smoothly shaven face.A man's lips moved, and that's when Kyrian realised that Michael Franti and Spearhead were still happily Say Heying in his ear. He quickly pulled out the earpieces."Hi there. Sorry about laughing. I don't know why I did that."Tall, Dark and Dangerous narrowed his eyes, apparently at the reminder of Kyrian's faux pas, and said something incomprehensible in a deep, almost gravelly voice. Ah ha, a foreigner."No comprende," he apologised. His visitor actually rolled his eyes in disgust. At him! Kyrian would've jumped to his feet to tell him off if he didn't have the flipping cast on his ankle. His visitor angrily spouted off more gibberish in whatever language he was speaking, and Kyrian rolled his own eyes in response, which apparently wasn't very well received since suddenly the man was looming threateningly over him.Trapped in the chaise lounge, at his mercy, Kyrian could only freeze and hope the man wouldn't get violent.Holding out his hands in what he hoped was the universal symbol for wait a sec, he tried placating the aggressor. "Hey, hey, I'm sorry, okay? I. Don't. Understand. You," he enunciated. Using basic body language, he thumped his chest, shook his head, and tapped his temple as he tried Tarzan-esque simplicity. "Me no understand.""Oh for fuck's sake!" The man threw up his hands as if Kyrian was the one acting like an idiot."Geez, why didn't you just speak English in the first place? That would be the logical language to start with considering the country we're in." Kyrian snarked as he tried to keep his lips from twitching into another inappropriate smile. The whole thing really was pretty funny in a weird way. "I'm Kyrian.""Kyrian...?" the other man prompted.Kyrian quirked his brow. Liked to get formal, did he? "De Angelo."The other man winced and groaned, "Oh, that's fucking original," and shook his head with a huff. What the heck? "Say buddy, where do you get off laughing at my name? And you haven't told me your name to make fun of.""I'm Seth.""Seth...?" Kyrian mocked Seth's earlier tone.He shrugged with a deliberate smirk. "Just Seth."Kyrian gasped with outrage and was about to attempt rising to confront him, cast or no cast, when Seth leaned closer to him and inhaled. No two ways about it-he sniffed him. Okay, this was getting a bit odd, even for him. He needed to nip this visit in the bud."Okay, just Seth." Kyrian watched warily as a contented look crossed the man's face for the first time, turning it into something serene and beautiful. "Thanks for visiting the house. Hope you liked it. Uh..."Seth dropped to his knees, heavily lidded eyes locked on Kyrian's startled ones, and wasted no time in claiming a toe-curling, bone-melting kiss... Vance thought his pride meant everything to him...until fate sent Joey into his lair and into his heart.Vance grew up the odd one out in a macho and very insular pride of lion shifters. Differences like enjoying the cool fall weather are bad enough-his pridemates would kill him if they learned he was gay. Still, his pride is all he knows. He'd never even met a shifter of another type...until he discovers an unconscious cougar male in his lair.Joey is on the run and wants to keep Vance at arm's length, especially since someone very close to the lion is the root of all his troubles. But there is something irresistible about Vance, something which has Joey wanting more than he ever dared to dream. When their lives are threatened, Joey must choose whether to sacrifice himself, or try to live and keep Vance close...for the very short remainder of his life. What the reviewers are saying"4.5 out of 5! For such a short story, it was sure packed with a lot of great characters and a strong plot...From beginning to end it pulled me in and held me by my throat until the last page." - Whipped Cream Read An Excerpt:[Click here to expand/collapse]EXCERPT:At once overwhelmingly curious about his visitor, Vance knelt again and slowly pulled the blanket completely away from the male's head and upper body. And stared. The unconscious shifter was by far the most attractive man he'd ever seen. Accustomed to the huge, craggy features of his pride, he was entranced by the beautiful, angelic lines of his face. From checking his pupil reaction earlier, Vance knew his eyes were green-”another anomaly. Almost every other shifter he'd met had some form of brown or golden eyes like himself. His shoulders and chest were lightly muscled and defined-very masculine, but carrying a lot less bulk than Vance was used to seeing. A tattoo in some sort of abstract, tribal-looking design covered most of one deltoid. He was drawn to it, and after closer examination, he noticed how cleverly the form of a cat was woven into the seemingly random lines at the centre of the design. His skin, too, was different. Very light, smooth-looking. Vance tested the shoulder with the tat. Yes, smooth and soft, with no discernable body hair below the neck-”at least for the parts on display. Flushing, he had to restrain himself from removing the blanket entirely to check the rest of his person. His colour deepened when he realised that he was still stroking the tattoo, and he quickly snatched his hand away. Needing something to keep himself occupied, he drew the blanket back over the males shoulders and stood restlessly. He decided to take inventory of his supplies, something he hadn't bothered to do for a while. When it was just him, it didn't matter. But a part of Vance nudged him, whispering that it was important to be prepared, that the male might be here a while.Unused to company in his cave, Vance found his gaze drifting back to the huddled form as he worked. Frowning, he wondered whether the fire was doing any good at all. If he was drugged, he might not be able to regulate his temperature normally in either direction.Better check him...I mean, his temp out. Don't want him uncomfortable. Part of him was gleeful about having a reason to touch the male again. He's unconscious, drugged, and most likely straight. And gorgeous. Don't forget gorgeous.Stop it!Vance knelt again by the male, the position becoming a familiar one. He raised a hand, thinking to feel the back of his guest's neck to try to gauge his temperature. But just as he was about to make contact with the male's exposed nape, he suddenly found himself flat on his back, a knee firmly pressed to his chest...
