All about D.J.Manly

D.J. ManlyI was always an outsider, different from the rest of my family. I think writers tend to be outsiders. Isolation or not feeling apart of the mainstream gives one a perspective, a distance that others don't have. It also forces one to find an outlet to express things that maybe you feel you can't. When I was just a kid, I was interested in human rights. When I saw injustice, I spoke up. When I heard a joke that was racist or sexist, I spoke up. I was talking about gay rights when I was fourteen. As you can imagine, people thought I was a bit eccentric.

I left high school early, and went to work doing crap jobs. Since my Dad had been in Korea, I had a chance to have my college paid. After tasting crap jobs, I thought nothing could be worse than slaving away all day at that. I was on the deans list every semester and writing for the school newspaper. I was studying literature and creative writing. Suddenly other people were talking about stuff I found interesting. I graduated, went to university on scholarship, and spent years earning degrees, teaching and writing. If someone had told me one day I'd be a teacher, I would have laughed. I'm sure if some of my former teachers found out what I'd become, they'd be very surprised, all except for that English teacher, who I think saw something the others' didn't. Maybe she'd been an outsider too.

I opened my own business in 2005 and published my first book around the same time.

My life is pretty busy. I have a lot of responsibility and not a lot of down time. Writing constitutes my down time. I do like to watch movies, and take walks. I love music too. I like to socialise but don't get a lot of time to do that either. Most of all, I love to write!

How D.J.Manly got into Erotic Romance?

I wrote a book, a hot vampire book called Eternal Souls with two males, and submitted it to Extasy Books on a whim when I saw they accepted that stuff. The result was positive and that was the beginning of my story. I had no idea it would become hot. When I started writing, e publishing and the m/m genre was in its' infancy. I tried the traditional stuff but my first encounter with a publisher was not good. I started in the bad old days when e-writing was considered a joke, when writers in the field were clamoring for legitimacy. Anyway, the woman accepted the story, then made me rewrite it, then rejected it again then went out of business. Not exactly inspiring. I think it was natural for me to write male/male because I was a big gay rights supporter and I believed gay love should be portrayed, not hidden in the closet somewhere. Also I remember reading a book called "The Lord Won't Mind," by Gordon Merrick when I was younger, and the book enthralled me. I read it over and over. I knew I wanted to write in that genre.

The Scoop!

Since I am in Canada and always so busy, I don't have time to go to conferences and book signings. Maybe one day I will. Fans can keep up with me at my website www.djmanlyfiction.com. I do try to keep it updated and yes, I fall behind but you can always find information there. Also, email me any time. I love to hear from readers, and no matter what my schedule is, I always write back.

What D.J.Manly likes to read...

I love Margaret Laurence, a Canadian Novelist, and Charles Dickens. George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones, My Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I love The Bronte sisters. Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre are two are my favorite classic novels.

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
I believe they have had a profound influence. As I said in the bio, as an outsider, I think I have a perspective on life that has given me distance. I've been used to struggle and hard work. I've had a lot of different jobs, and have always identified with the underdog. I've seen sadness, and tragedy, and I've seen the best and worst in people. I believe my background in sociology shows through in my writing sometimes, and also being a Canadian. I believe in love and redemption and I hope my characters reflect that.

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
Um, tough question. I love them all and for different reasons. Recently, I guess Terrance in The Severing. He had a profound effect on me. He is an outsider, a man who speaks to the dead, and not because he wants to, because he has no choice. People think he's insane, yet he's not. That perception however colours everything, even the way he feels about himself.

Angelo, in Arsenic and Rio, because of his kindness and beautiful soul. He has seen hardship in his life and yet rises above it. He is betrayed by his own blood and by the one he loves and still, he is in the end, able to forgive and go on loving. Angelo is beautiful, inside and out. I fell in love with him as I wrote him.

My first love is Emilien in my upcoming book at Amber, called Battling Glass. His struggle to define who he is, amidst the turmoil and pain of family speaks to my soul.

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
All levels. I write at the level the book calls for. Some books are hotter than others due to the context. I enjoy writing all of it. I think if I had to choose, I'd choose about a two...I think sex should enhance the story, not the other way around, but it really depends on the plot.

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
Gordon Merrick, The Bronte's, Charles Dickens, Margaret Laurence. These are writers I studied at university. Frankly, I don't like traditional romance. I read that stuff when I was a young teen because older women around me read it, and I had nothing else to read. Can't say I ever really enjoyed it.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
The plot and the characters come at the same time. I get a basic idea for a story based around the characters. For example when I conceptualised Blood Pond, I said....what if an ex cop is looking for the murderer of his younger brother, and there was a witness? The witness on the run would be the other significant character in the book. He doesn't want to be found...etc...That's basically how I think, so it's like the chicken and egg for me. Who can say which comes first, plot and characters reinforce each other in my books.

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
First, I've come to believe that writers should support each other, that we are a unique community and shouldn't regard other writers as "the competition." I'm genuinely pleased to see a writer on the best sellers list, or see that they got an award or a great review. I can't compete with anyone because I don't write like anyone else, and I don't want to. I write like me and authentic writers are unique. I know there are some who try to copy others but they are pretty transparent. Some writers are better than others but if they have the talent, they are just in different stages. True writers will keep developing and eventually come into their own. Others who write for the wrong reasons will fade away. Some books will be more successful than others. You can never predict which ones. I never expected Blood Pond to do so well. There have been other books I expected to be more popular but weren't. I stopped trying to figure it out. I write, I try to write well and I write what I love. I hope the readers enjoy what I write and buy it. That's all I can do. If it's a hit, I'm usually surprised but I accept the fact that readers are as different as the writers. I can't please everyone. I write a book and some people will say it has too much sex, or not enough sex, it's too sweet, it's not sweet enough, the main character is too mean...or they love the fact that he develops and changes. I can't write plastic characters. People are flawed. So that said, I try to write the best story I can, knowing some readers will like it and I'll catch hell from others. That's all I can do.

7.Describe your writing space.
It's a spare room with a futon, filing cabinet and computer desk. It has one window. At the office when the clients are gone, I write at my huge desk on a laptop. It's not fancy, very utilitarian but it does the job!

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
My toy box is in the basement, covered with cobwebs....but oh, if it could talk!!

What or who does your ideal man look like?
Dark hair, dark eyes, tall, nicely toned. I like them dark and mysterious.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
Oh my goodness, no one scene ever goes exactly the same way twice. Let's say there are fractions of reality in my sex scenes.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
I like to wear jeans, leather pants. I like leather a lot.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
Tank tops and nice summer shorts. It's snowing here. Guess where my mind is?

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
Unwrapped a guy wrapped up with Saran Wrap on my birthday. My friend set it up and this gorgeous guy, then my date, was my birthday present. That was fun!
