All about Scarlet Blackwell

Scarlet BlackwellWriting has always been a bit of a compulsion for me. I've decided to quit a few times and always ended up going back to it so it's something I can't really control.

I start a new book when an idea pops randomly into my head and I've let it take root a while. I might have this idea for months before I act on it and sometimes it hasn't progressed beyond a page before I start it whereas other times, I've got whole chapters planned in my head.

Even if I don't have a lot to go on, I might start writing it anyway and see where it takes me. Often these books turn out to be the best although I'd prefer that I was disciplined enough to plot each chapter before I started writing.

How Scarlet Blackwell got into Erotic Romance?

I started writing at aged 13. I've always written romance and have drifted towards m/m romance in the past few years. I've also dabbled in horror and haven't written off writing in other genres as my career progresses.

The Scoop!

Writing hard to get more books on the calendar for this year. At the moment I have a list of 14 books to start but seeing as most of these are left over from last year, it's doubtful more than a handful of them will be completed.

Readers can see my forthcoming books and works in progress on my website or follow my rantings on facebook. I welcome all emails.

What Scarlet Blackwell likes to read...

My favourite authors are Emily Bronte and Edgar Allan Poe.

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
First hand experience of a broken heart is always useful.

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
It's difficult to choose but I'd say Matt from Rescue Me, just because he incited the most controversy. I was thrilled with the amount of vitriol directed at him (and me). He's the sort of real flesh and blood character I like to write. I don't do sweetness and light and cardboard caricatures.

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
I enjoy all heat levels. Sometimes I write certain heat levels for certain publishers. Sometimes I write controversial books for certain publishers. In general, most of my books are saucy but I've written sweet romance too, The Golden-Haired Boy last year and I Am Fallen, coming March 2012. I don't write sex for the sake of it and I like to think my readers expect a little bit more than that from me.

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
Emily Bronte. She knew how to write wild, dark-hearted characters and I learned everything I know from Wuthering Heights.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
Either. I can come up with a location for a plot and a character with an interesting job that I could write a story around or I could imagine a wild love story first and build the characters around that.

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
Not to hold each word precious when it comes to editing and to be able to accept much more criticism than praise.

7.Describe your writing space.
Organised chaos.

Places I would love to work...

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
I've got Scrabble and Monopoly. I love the challenge of getting a great word score using the letters Q and Z.

What or who does your ideal man look like?
Tall, dark, a nice smile, good shoes.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
The whole of The Captain's Man and The Captain's Beloved are based on real life.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
Something black.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
A suit or a uniform.

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
Talking at the back of the class.

What the reviewers are saying

"It's a sin how much I enjoyed this story. I laughed so hard and then I felt so sad. It's funny, sexy, sweet, naughty and poignant all at once. At only ninety-nine pages, it's a lot more than I was expecting. I was anticipating just a frivolous vacation cruise romp with lots of hot sex. And it is that but it's so much more, too. It's a real romance with plenty of real emotional risk for both heroes." -Whipped Cream Reviews

"a fun, holiday romp...a great read for a lazy Saturday summer afternoon...loads of red-hot sex..." -Dark Divas Reviews
