All about Natalie Dae

Natalie DaeI started telling short stories to my sister at bedtime then progressed to writing them at school. When I was seven, my teacher told me something I'd written was "wonderful" and from then on I wanted to be a writer or a teacher. I wrote four novels in my early twenties, and back then it was the old send-by-snail-mail route. I remember having to spend nine pounds on postage and scrabbling the money together to send each one. All of them were rejected, and it wasn't until I'd had editor training that I realised why. They were AWFUL. The plots were all right but the execution...oh dear. So I gave up for about five years until my husband sat me in front of the computer and got me to join a writing group. I haven't looked back.

I used to only be able to concentrate on one book, but these days I have several on the go at any one time. Three are usually with co-authors (Lily Harlem, Jaime Samms and Sam Crescent) and the others are my own works.

How Natalie Dae got into Erotic Romance?

My first novels were lame romances and those that came later were mainstream horror. After several rejections, I realised I wasn't going to break in anywhere writing horror (my first love). An editor suggested I try erotica. I hated it. I blushed. I didn't feel comfortable, and I couldn't shake the feeling of "This is so rude!"

But I got over that!

The Scoop!

At the moment I'm writing novels with Lily, Jaime and Sam, plus I have a couple of series and a novella to finish. I was asked to write for Loveyhoney so I have those to pen and some other things going on that are exciting but not for revealing yet.

What Natalie Dae likes to read...

Historicals, horror, thrillers...those are my main choices in reading matter. I love being taken back into the past and I love hating being creeped out by scary books. I also love-Gawd, I love a lot!-a good old dilemma and being shocked by the baddie being someone totally different to who I had suspected.

INTERVIEW

The Sensible Questions:

1.How have your life experiences affected your writing?
Without going into too much detail, I've lived a life that most people won't have lived by the time they're eighty. I'm talking in terms of emotion and hardship. I have a vast understanding of many things unpleasant and my life has taught me to see all sides. Many of my life experiences are in my books but shrouded in some way. I've found if my characters face certain situations I'm able to relate to them immediately and express that in my writing.

2.Which of your characters is your favourite, and why?
Emmet from His Beautiful Wench. I just love him. The reason isn't for sharing LOL. It's a private thing.

3.What heat level do you enjoy writing most, and why?
I prefer writing the tamer scenes but they never work out that way! I also try for sensual and end up raunchy.

4.What authors have influenced you most (not necessarily in the romance genre)?
Stephen King and Ruth Rendell.

5.Which comes to you first when you write, the basic premise of the plot, or the characters?
I usually just have a title idea, or a very loose idea (say: What if a man got run over and his lover had to find the killer herself?) and see what happens. I just sit and write, see what comes out. It's more fun for me that way. If I'm told what to write I stall.

6.What is the biggest lesson that you've learned since you began writing?
You will never stop learning or know it all.

7.Describe your writing space.
I have two computers-a laptop for work and a PC for writing. I'm in one corner of the living room, but one day, when all the kids have left home, I plan on using the small bedroom as my office. I have a can of Raid for the days when flies or wasps come close and a little Grumpy toy for the days when I'm, well, grumpy, to remind me what I probably look like and it makes me stop looking like it! The picture I have on the wall is something of a dare to myself. Although my family know what I write, and we talk about it like we would the weather, there wasn't really any visuals in our home that said, "Hey, she writes about boobs and bums." When I saw the picture I had to have it. It says everything without being too much.

The Naughty Questions:

How many toys do you have in your toy-box? (and we don't mean Barbie dolls!)
You want me to answer that? Like, not in private? Um...ok. Well, there's my Grumpy, and I have a Bagpuss that you can heat up in the microwave to keep you warm and he smells of lavender, and I know you said no Barbie but I can't leave her out...I have a Barbie I got for a recent birthday because I never had one as a child and... What? You didn't mean that kind of toybox? Oh, sorry...

What or who does your ideal man look like?
Jason Statham. That is all. I'm actually having a huge problem with him. He won't leave me alone. I mean, he read one of my books and now he won't stop hanging around in between films. Bless him, it's lovely and all that, but I'm in love with my husband. Jason will get it eventually.

Are any of the sexy scenes in your books based on real life?
I have a whole book that is based on real life but I won't say which one.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in order to feel sexy?
This is a difficult one. I never feel sexy, so even if I had clothes that were meant to make me feel that way, I still wouldn't! I'd just feel a moron.

What kind of clothing do you think makes men look sexy?
Jeans and white T-shirts.

What is the most outrageously naughty thing you've ever done?
I've never been naughty. Nope. Never.

Ursula Meadows, Mistress Shadow by day, longs for the love she feels for her client, a man she's dubbed Beautiful Luke, to be returned. As she goes through her week at work entertaining all the men on her list and giving them what they want, she spends her nights on a mission to make Luke fall in love with her.

The contrast between her daily life and her evenings is stark, but she's determined to have the sexy-as-sin man in her bed permanently and not just on the bed in her dungeon. Will she get what her heart aches for, or will Luke, a self-confessed brawler and user of women, find it difficult to stick to just one woman?

Klara Woods, Mistress Darkness by day, is a nymphomaniac. She took a job in a BDSM dungeon as the only way she could think of to sate her huge sexual appetite. Madam allows her to give "extras", and Klara is happy with the arrangement until she goes out one Monday evening in search of a man to fulfil her needs and meets one who wants so much more than just sex. They agree they won't have sex until Friday, but it proves difficult for Klara. Every time they meet she can't resist doing something sexual with him, and the wait until Friday becomes intolerable...

Along with the knowledge she may have found the only man who can service her needs full-time, Klara has to decide whether, if they make a go of their relationship, she can leave the dungeon and all her clients behind. Is her love for Ben strong enough for her to become a one-man woman? Is Ben's stamina enough to keep Klara sated 24-7? Friday night will be the ultimate test...

What the reviewers are saying

"...an erotic epistolary novel that is more Victorian-like, more sentimental than a historical romance novel typically published today. It's different and entertaining. I enjoyed its difference and I also appreciated the author's unique perspective." -Whipped Cream
