Stride’s shadow suddenly loomed up. He slid his sword out of its sheath and sliced it through the air.

Zero gasped as the sword came right at him. He was sure he’d been sliced in two until he looked down to see that he was still intact but half of the quill pen was on the floor of the cave. He was still holding onto the other end for dear life. The feather clung to his hand.

“Drop it!” Stride bellowed. “It’s poison. Drop it now!”

“Are you out of your mind?” Zero took a step back.

Stride reached out and shook loose the rest of the quill pen from Zero’s hand then pressed him back against the wall.

Zero was about to protest again when suddenly his eyes widened. “Holy shit! What the fuck is that?”

Right in front of them, the two parts of the quill began to wiggle towards each other across the floor.

“Fuck!” Stride cried out. He reached out to grab one of the ends but when he did, his hand suddenly caught on fire. He jerked away with a howl and went after it again with his sword.

It was too late. The two broken pieces had joined with each other like two lovers torn apart by time. With lightning speed, the quill disappeared into one of the dark corners.

“It’s alive.” Zero swallowed, trying to move out of Stride’s shadow. “Where is it?”

Stride stood in front of him. “Stay put,” he said between clenched teeth.

Again Zero tried to see where it had gone. Stride grabbed his arm. “Wait.”

“What? Why? It’s gone.”

“It’s not gone. It’s resting.”

“What do you mean…resting? Honestly, Stride, I really believe you need to be treated for paranoia because…” Suddenly his words died in his throat as he watched a shadow crawl up over the wall of the cave, expanding rapidly in size until right in front of them stood nothing short of a fire-breathing dragon.

“You were saying?” Stride glanced at him.

“Shi…it. Oh shit. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!”

The dragon stood watching them. Stride took a step in its direction, and it breathed out one foul stream of fire, missing Stride by inches. Stride reared back.

“You fell for some pretty damned elemental magic,” Stride said, his tone amused. “Owl feather responds to skin types in different ways. Vampires create other…monsters.”

“Huh. Now he tells me,” Zero muttered.

“Easy, easy,” Stride told the belligerent beast as he and Zero slowly backed up. Stride glanced at Zero. “If you know the way out of here, I suggest you take it.”

The dragon shuffled its large feet forwards, red eyes focused on Stride.

“Okay,” Zero said, watching the dragon scrape one foot, then the other, like a bull about to vent its full fury, “but what about…about ah…you?”

“I’m a little busy right now.”

Zero gawked at him. “Do you really think you can kill that thing?”

“No. But I’m going to slow it down some. Go. We have a lot to talk about, you and I.” Stride made a move towards the monster again. “Go now!”
